Comments on Luke 14

     This chapter is straightforward so I will limit my comments
to the obscurities.

v5  See my comments in LDSS Vol. 3, No. 10 on Matt. 12 for the
"ox in the mire".

     "ass", a bad translation in the KJV.  A better translation
would be "son".

v26 "hate", this verse is dealing with allegiance to Christ and
the willingness to abandon those who are opposed to him.  If
one's family members are opposed to Jesus, then the disciple must
abandon family and follow Jesus per v. 33.  The "hate" is held up
in contrast to the love one must have for Jesus, as it is seen in
16:13.  Naturally, if the entire family is composed of disciples,
then there is no need to "hate", or abandon, them for Jesus. 
Clearly, the disciple is not to be filled with hate for family in
the sense of enmity and abhorrence.  They are to sever the ties
of love that bind them to their families and leave them because
their love for Jesus is stronger, and so by comparison "hate"
their families.

v28-32  If you are going to enter into the kingdom of heaven, you
have to fully commit.  Anything less, and you'll not succeed.
