Comments on 1 Samuel 3 v1 Compare Moroni 10:24-26. Eli apparently isn't receiving much revelation himself either, despite being the Temple high priest. v12 Compare 2:27-36, 4:17-18. v17 Eli is aware that his family has been cursed and wants Samuel to tell him forthrightly. Eli's injunction "God do so to thee, and more also" means "May the curse upon me be upon you also, and even worse, if you do not tell me what has been revealed". It is a rather unkind and bitter response. v18 Eli is resigned to his fate, and the fate of His family. The statement echoes hopelessness, as Eli makes no attempt to plead the case of his sons, nor to change the situation. v21 While word from the Lord was uncommon in those days (cp. v. 1), the Lord is speaking to Samuel and he is getting to know Him by revelation (ct. v. 7, 2:12).
