Comments on 2 Chronicles 33 v1-9 Hezekiah's son Manasseh takes over as king of Judah and undoes all of the good work his father by getting Judah involved in idolatry of the worst type. The apparent ease with which he does so indicates the curse leveled at Hezekiah for his pride at the end of the last chapter had application to Judah in general. v10-17 The Lord warns Manasseh and the people of Judah, but they ignore the warnings. The result is the Lord sends Assyria against them, and Manasseh is captured and brought to Assyria in chains. In his extremities, Manasseh repents and worships the Lord, and is summarily returned to Jerusalem. Upon returning to Jerusalem he has all of the local idols removed and restores Temple worship, but some of the hilltop altars remain in place. v18-20 Closing formula and summary of Manasseh's reign over Judah. v21-25 Manasseh's son Amon assumes the throne of Jerusalem and he gets involved in idol worship again. He however does not repent as did Manasseh. Rather, he is executed by conspiring officials, who in turn are executed by the people. Josiah his son then assumes the throne. Copyright © 2002 by S.
