Comments on Joshua 6 Jericho is besieged and sacked by miraculous means (v. 1- 21). I would assume the text is deliberately obscure on how exactly the walls fell down so as to emphasize its miraculous nature. Note v. 18-19 prohibits looting of precious metals, so as to indicate Israel's goal here is not to pillage for booty. The oath to Rahab is also honored and she and her family are permitted to live among Israel (v. 22-25). Joshua ends the siege with a curse of Jericho forever (v. 26-27). Overall, my impression is the account is intended to show that the Lord is in fact delivering the Canaanites into the hands of the Israelites as He said He would all along. Had they listened 40 years earlier they could have done it then. Copyright © 2002 by S. Kurt Neumiller . All rights reserved.
